palette
.helikos

ἕλικος · helikos — Greek, “of the spiral”

A design language for interfaces that are alive. Material treated the screen as paper and ink. Palette treats it as pigment in a current: colour flows, controls change shape with intent, and decoration grows with the data it sits on.

Every motion is one turn of a helix. It cycles, it grows, it comes back to rest.

Law 1

Motion carries meaning

Speed, amplitude and direction encode state. Idle breathes, working runs, an error stops dead. Nothing moves only to look busy.

Law 2

One tempo, one off-switch

Every moving part locks to a shared 2.4 s beat. One Still switch freezes the page, and each component keeps its state in colour and shape.

Law 3

Lightness is fixed

Pigments flow in hue only. Lightness and chroma are pinned per theme, so text contrast holds in every frame of every gradient.

Law 4

AI proposes, people ratify

The model speaks in murmurs and drafts. A person accepts with a tap or a swipe. Every proposal stays undoable for its whole life.

Flux

text

Pigment that flows through type. In Palette it marks provenance: text the model wrote flows until a person accepts it.

Hall B cooling load is 12% under design at current IT load, with headroom for two more racks.

Means
Model-authored, not yet accepted. It stops flowing once a person accepts it.
Still
Freezes mid-beat. Contrast is unchanged.

Glimpse

button

Shows four or five letters. The label travels right to left through the window. Hover or focus opens it to full width.

Use
Toolbars and dense tables where width is scarce
Access
Full label is the accessible name. Still shows it whole.

Morph

button

One target, five intents. Tap for the primary. Drag past the threshold to choose a direction; the button stretches and changes into it.

↑ DelegateApprove → ↓ Snooze← Reject
Use
Triage queues: approvals, RFIs, alerts
Access
Arrow keys pick a direction, Enter applies it

Tide

field

A wave packet orbits the edge of the field. Its count, speed and colour report state, and each keystroke sends a ripple.

State: idle
Map
Idle: one slow packet · Thinking: three fast packets · Error: a standing wave in madder · Valid: the wave settles into a solid line
Still
Edge colour and the state label carry the same information

Murmur

snackbar

The snackbar for an AI web. It streams, proposes, counts its own life down and swipes away. Murmurs appear at the bottom right.

Swipe
Right accepts, left dismisses. Hover pauses the life line.
Stack
Three visible at most; older murmurs fold away

Reel

card

A card that plays like a 12-second film: subject, metric, trend, risk, next step. It loops until someone acts on it.

Holds handover. Swipe right to send to the CSA.
Control
Tap the left or right half to scrub; hold to pause; arrow keys when focused
Still
Shows one scene at a time with manual stepping

Bloom

decoration

Decoration that grows with the value it decorates. Each branch is a finished milestone, seeded from the record ID, so a project always grows the same plant.

Use
Progress, adoption, capacity: any value that accumulates
Budget
Grows only on change, then rests. Never loops.

Ring

keyboard

Press and hold in the field below for half a second. A ring of letters opens under your pointer, laid out like a bent QWERTY keyboard. Draw through the letters in one stroke, like a brush character, then lift. Alternatives appear around the ring only when the guess is uncertain.

Hold anywhere here · then trace a word, e.g. h → e → l → o for “hello” · tap the centre to close

Layout
Top row across the top, bottom row along the bottom, left-hand keys on the left, right-hand keys on the right. Typists find letters where their hands expect them.
Why a ring
A stroke between two letters crosses the empty centre, so only the letters you aim at register. Grid keyboards need language models to undo the letters you brush past.
Scope
Augments the system keyboard for one-thumb replies and short commands. It never replaces it.
