Seal

Seal makes buttons wear their reach. A full ring means the model may press it, a half ring means it may prepare it, and an empty ring means only a person may press it. Irreversible actions seal with a one-beat hold.

Live specimen

Hold the deposit button for 1.2 seconds to seal it; let go early and nothing happens. Then let the agent try all three buttons.

Anatomy

When to use

  • Every button on a screen an agent can see. Reach marks belong on all of them.
  • The hold for actions that can’t be undone: payments, releases, signatures, deletions.
  • Not the hold for anything undoable. Act at once and offer undo instead.

Best practices

  • Put the amount and the object in the label: “Hold to release S$48,200 deposit”.
  • List the consequences under the button, separated by dots.
  • Make sealed buttons full width on phones, so the hold is easy to keep.
DoSay what a hold will do, and to what.
Don’tDon’t make people hold a vague label. A hold is a promise; they need to know what they promise.

Accessibility

  • Holding Space or Enter seals with the keyboard.
  • The consequences are linked as the button’s description.
  • Refusals are spoken and shown in words: “Refused · only a person can seal this”.
