Aperture

Aperture shows what the model is reading for a task and how much of its reading each source takes. Take a source out and the sentences that relied on it are flagged before anything is redrafted. Put too much in and the model says it will skim.

Live specimen

The model is drafting a valuation memo from five sources. Hover or focus one to see which sentences rely on it. Take the June valuation out, then redraft: only the sentence that used it changes. Add the 412 tenant emails and the budget runs over.

Anatomy

When to use

  • When an answer depends on which documents the model read: memos, reconciliations, due diligence, anything a lender or auditor will check.
  • When people steer the model by narrowing what it reads rather than by rewriting the request.
  • Not for a quick answer from one source. Name the source in the answer instead (Trace).

Behaviour

Aperture never trims the view on its own. When the budget runs over, it says what will happen and leaves the choice to the person.

Best practices

  • Name each source with its scope and when it was read: “June valuation report · pages 4–19 · read 4 min ago”.
  • Show each source’s share of the budget as a number, not only as a bar.
  • Flag before you rewrite. The person decides when the draft changes.
  • Keep Add and Remove person only. The model can suggest a source; it can’t widen its own view.
DoShow what the model reads, with each source’s share, beside what it wrote.
Don’tDon’t hide the sources behind a count. People can’t tell what the memo rests on.

Accessibility

  • The budget lens is an image labelled with the share in use; the overflow warning is a polite live region.
  • Each remove button names its source: “Stop reading June valuation report”.
  • Focusing a source marks the sentences that rely on it, the same as hover.
  • Flagged sentences are struck through and counted in words, not marked by colour alone.
