Trace
Trace unfolds how a figure the model produced was built: the formula at each step and every input underneath it, each marked as read from a source or estimated by the model. Replace an estimate with your own figure and everything above it recomputes.
Tap Trace to unfold the forecast. Tap a source to open it. Then use your own figure for occupancy or operating costs and watch every value above it change, with the old value struck beneath.
Anatomy
When to use
- Any number the model calculated that someone will act on: income, yields, valuations, forecasts, totals.
- Charts the model built: the same tree explains each series.
- Not for figures read straight from a source. Those need a source link (Pin, on the Roadmap), not a derivation.
Behaviour
| Input | Looks like | Offers |
|---|---|---|
| Read | Ink value, a Read tag, the source and its date | Open the source at the rows it read |
| Estimated | Pigment value, an Estimated tag, the model’s assumption | Use my figure |
| Yours | Ink value, a Yours tag, what the model had estimated | Revert |
When an input changes, every calculated value above it recomputes and shows the value it replaced, struck through. The figure at the top still wears pigment: the model calculated it, from inputs you chose.
Best practices
- Open on the figure, not the tree. Most people check one input; show the whole tree only on request.
- Write formulas in words: “Area × rent × 12 months × occupancy”.
- Give every estimate its assumption in one line: “Assumes Level 7 re-lets by June.”
- Count the mix where the figure sits: “5 inputs · 3 read · 2 estimated”.
Accessibility
- Trace is a disclosure button; the tree is a nested list read in order.
- Tags say Read, Estimated or Yours in words, not only in colour.
- A change is announced with its result: “Occupancy set to 90%. Net operating income is now S$20.4M.”
