Premise
Premise shows the assumptions behind an answer as chips you can change. The model’s assumptions wear pigment; one you set turns to ink. Change one, and only the sentences that depend on it are rewritten.
Hover or tap a chip to see which sentences depend on it. Change “Next quarter” or “Interest” and watch only those sentences rewrite. Set Level 7 while Q4 2026 is chosen and nothing changes, because nothing depends on it.
Anatomy
When to use
- Forecasts, valuations and plans that rest on judgement calls: dates, rates, occupancy, scope.
- Wherever the model had to interpret an ambiguous request, such as “next quarter” or “the usual terms”.
- Instead of asking a question up front, when a sensible default exists. Ask first only when no default is safe (Ask).
Behaviour
| Moment | What people see |
|---|---|
| Hover or focus a chip | Every sentence that depends on it is underlined in tyrian |
| Open a chip | The model’s reason for its assumption, and the other values |
| Choose another value | The chip turns to ink; only dependent sentences rewrite, in flowing pigment |
| Nothing depends on it | “Nothing in this forecast depends on Level 7 in Q4 2026.” |
| Accept | Rewritten sentences settle into still pigment |
Sentences that didn’t change keep their accepted state. Review shrinks to the sentences an assumption actually touched.
Best practices
- State each premise as a value, not a hedge: “Interest 3.6%”, not “assuming rates stay roughly flat”.
- Show three to five premises. More than that and the answer is really a model; give it a table.
- Keep dependencies honest. If a sentence uses a premise, declare it; a rewrite that misses a sentence breaks trust.
- Keep the person’s choices when the model answers again. Their ink premises carry forward.
Accessibility
- Each chip is a button named with its value and who set it: “Interest: 4.1%, set by you.”
- Choices are a radio group; Escape closes it.
- A rewrite is announced once with its scope: “Rewrote 2 of 4 sentences.”
